ARMANDO BISELLI – 15 June 1989

It is not easy to approach the figurative space of Giovanna Bruschi (at least for myself, given my former academic acquaintance with the artist) whom I now find to be mature both in observation and technique. While reviewing her work, in an anthological investigation and through a sensitive and certainly not technical judgment, one immediately is aware of the spontaneous inclination of this artist to avoid any adherence with strictly realistic subject matter, but to exanimate first and foremost spiritual and idealistic motivations. I still see Giovanna at her school desk, a discreet and reserved student, yet receptive to those principles of knowledge and beauty that she inherited from the Institute of Art in Perugia, paramount to her vocation, and that she attended while being surrounded by a suitable environment both for the representation of an emerging world and to its depiction through a personal expression provided and readily available by that school. Among Giovanna’s skills and artistry, an innate sense of attitude and concentration evolved during the years at the Academy of Fine Arts in Perugia – during which time I lost sight of her – are presently the guiding principles of her teaching position in an experimental Institute. Giovanna is again immersed in an intense artistic undertaking, constantly involved in the production of personal and collective Exhibitions, from which she continues to gain ambitious and certainly deserved awards. An in-depth review of her creations (and they are many and continuous, in every sense, in every way, in every capacity) leads me inside a specific atmosphere, charged with nuances, suggestions, indications and perceptions. I immediately sense a very unique structural method by which Giovanna knows how to exhibit her accomplishments, so varied in format and disposition, according to a deliberate attractive formula, designed to awaken in the observer a prompt visual and contemplative bewilderment. And it is thanks to the intellectual stimulation provided by her aesthetic clues and subject matter that I easily approached the production of Giovanna Bruschi: they are mostly etchings – the artist’s favorite medium to establish a dialogue with the viewer – bound to certain specific issues related to our awareness of being creatures made with spiritual values. There is a basic incentive that motivates her through her own statement: “Art is loving”, by which Giovanna defined herself during a presentation, in the sense that anything human derives and is made according to Love, a dimension that should signify and motivate the truth and the quality of our daily life. By the same token, some of Giovanna’s themes have been inspired by this concept, which she highlights in the context of a kind of delicate and essential symbolism, charged with emotions and moods, expressed either through a flower, a leaf or a stem, or through volumes and contours, lights and shadows, empty and filled spaces that merge within a harmony of images often beyond the composition, to indicate the eternal meaning of certain values. The artist does not resort to elaborate theorizations: a deduction, a word, a sentence are enough for her to be able to basically communicate and convert her messages it into a truly complex and refined aesthetic proposal. And this is when I can truly enjoy her etchings. It is enough to look at her compositional breakthrough, everywhere so exact and controlled in precise and accurate light variations as well as effective and clever design patterns so as to enhance the subject matter with a gradual intensity and added value. The result is a particular expressive technique, so accurately elaborated, through a graphic sign that, from its minute and penetrating microscopic exploration, opens up and expands into volumes rendered by a chiaroscuro effect that encircles all the shapes in their own autonomous creativity, or rearranges them according to figurative specifications reaching out for solutions capable of maturing aesthetic qualities and thematic validity. And, finally, the quality of her work comes alive both in the microscopic compositions, so singularly precise, as in those with a much wider surface, with the firm intention to highlight an explicit technical skill and a hidden ideological message. All of Giovanna’s original aspects of her work confirm the subjective quality of the artist and I can only applaud at her success, wishing her an ever more fruitful and wider recognition.
