GIUSEPPE ZAITI – February 1997

Notes on the graphic illustrations by Giovanna Bruschi from the book “IL VIAGGIO”
(The mystical experience of Blessed Angela of Foligno)

Amidst lights and shadows, labyrinths of lines, billowing veils and the process of evolution – surreal figures take shape and establish an animated dialogue between artist and the writer on the anguish of the soul that struggles to make the mystical events generating secret energies ever more real. A composition made by a sorrowful and joyful mixture of experiences emerges within a sequence of delicate and subtle messages in which Bruschi manages to insert in the episodes of the earthly “journey” of the Blessed Angela. The slow ascetic ascent highlighted in minute details, create an atmosphere suitable for total immersion in the mystery of the Crucified Christ. In another panel, Angela is depicted in a humble ecstatic demeanor while receiving the divine messages of the Supreme Good. The drawing become increasingly symbolic by virtue of a network of curved lines and plays of light and shadow to signify the choice of life made by Blessed Angela and the divine light above represented by the steps leading to the perfect love of God. With a skillful hand, Bruschi manifests the divine message in every design and pattern, therefore embodying the same sensations of the Blessed Angela. Alternating highs and lows and continuous struggles against evil, Angela reaches the highest peaks that lead her to God while Bruschi accompanies her with graphics, as if by hand, making us experience moments of joy and sorrow. Even the tests to which the Father tries his favorite daughter are excellently rendered with appropriate intuition and expert hand. Angela’s love for her sisters is outlined in a play of light and shadow in Cenacolo. The light filtering through the Virgin on the Blessed Angela lying on the floor in prayer at the Porziuncola is both disruptive and magical.
In Spirituale Matrimonio Angela embraces her God and Spouse, immersed and transformed into light by the Cross. Finally, I sincerely express my appreciation for Bruschi’s significant contribution to the creation of a truly worthwhile work both for an art that comes alive, but also for the symbology of her lines and patterns through which it was possible to experience a touch of high and very intense spirituality, almost in tacit agreement with the author of this text.
